1、 Advantages
1. High safety: This is the biggest advantage of iron chromium flow batteries. The electrolyte of this type of battery is an aqueous solution, which poses no risk of explosion. In addition, the electrolyte of iron chromium flow batteries is stored in two separate storage tanks, and the battery pack is also separated from the storage tanks. It generally operates at normal temperature and pressure, with extremely high safety.
2. Strong environmental adaptability: Compared with other cold sensitive batteries, iron chromium flow batteries have a wider operating temperature range, and their electrolyte can work normally at -40 ℃ -70 ℃ without any impact in extremely cold environments, demonstrating strong environmental adaptability.
3. Long cycle life: Currently, the common lithium iron phosphate batteries and ternary lithium batteries on the market have cycle lives of over 1000 and 2000 times, respectively, while the cycle life of iron chromium flow batteries is as high as over 10000 times, far higher than other types of batteries.
4. Low cost: The raw materials for iron chromium flow batteries are mainly iron and chromium, both of which have abundant reserves and low difficulty in obtaining. The cost is naturally low, and there will be no short-term resource constraints on battery development.
2、 Disadvantages
1. Low energy density: Most lithium batteries on the market can achieve an energy density of 400Wh/L, while iron chromium flow batteries can only reach a maximum energy density of 20Wh/L. The difference between the two is significant, and it is precisely because iron chromium flow batteries have a low energy density that their volume is much larger than other batteries.
2. Low energy conversion rate: Currently, the energy conversion rate of power batteries in new energy vehicles can reach over 80%, while the energy conversion rate of iron chromium flow batteries is much lower than 80%. After all, it is a recently launched battery technology, and there is still a lot of room for improvement in this area.
Can iron chromium flow batteries be used in automobiles?
At present, iron chromium flow batteries cannot be used for new energy vehicles. Although this battery technology has the advantages of high safety, strong environmental adaptability, long cycle life, and low cost, its disadvantages are quite fatal. In the case of low energy density of iron chromium flow batteries, which are also a 30 degree power battery pack, the volume of iron chromium flow batteries is much larger than other types of batteries and cannot be used for new energy vehicles.
In addition, the energy conversion rate of iron chromium flow batteries is also lower than other types of batteries. If used in new energy vehicles, the actual range of the vehicle will be severely reduced. At present, iron chromium flow batteries are mainly used in the field of energy storage. It is believed that with the emergence of iron chromium flow batteries, the battery industry can develop in a bright direction.
