Renesas holds a pivotal position in the global automotive semiconductor industry and originally intended to enter the silicon carbide field. In 2023, it also signed a ten-year silicon carbide wafer supply contract with Wolfspeed, preparing to showcase its capabilities. Renesas had originally planned to start mass producing silicon carbide products this year, but now Wolfspeed may collapse and Renesas has announced its withdrawal.

According to foreign media reports, considering the slowdown in the growth of the electric vehicle market, coupled with the oversupply and product price drop caused by the increase in production of silicon carbide manufacturers in mainland China, Renesas intends to abandon the production of automotive silicon carbide power semiconductors. It has even disbanded its silicon carbide team at its Takasaki factory in Japan and adjusted its production plan for silicon based power semiconductors simultaneously.

The industry estimates that if Wolfspeed applies for bankruptcy protection and Renesa exits, it is expected to accelerate the structural adjustment of the supply side of the silicon carbide industry, make the industrial order healthier, and the related Taiwan, China manufacturers will enjoy the benefit of transferring orders.

Xu Xiulan, Chairman of Global Crystal, has recently expressed her hope to seize the opportunity to transfer orders. She hopes that if any customers who previously worked with Wolfspeed wish to switch to a more reliable supplier, Global Crystal can fulfill this role.

Xu Xiulan stressed that Globegroup, for example, hopes to play the role of the most competitive and stable silicon carbide supplier among non Chinese Mainland manufacturers. Global Crystal's 12 inch silicon carbide wafers are expected to be launched this year and should have some cost competitiveness.

Hanlei and Jiajing are also expected to be the manufacturers in Taiwan, China who benefit from this wave of turnover. Hanlei mainly focuses on power semiconductor wafer foundry and has the production of third class semiconductors such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride (GaN); Jiajing is responsible for the epitaxial growth of key materials in wafer manufacturing, and the two manufacturers have the ability to work together.

Not only that, Hanlei has also joined forces with the world's advanced technology to enter the manufacturing of 8-inch silicon carbide semiconductor wafers.
